'Live in Japan' was recorded during a 3-week tour of Japan in October 2018. The album consists of excerpts of concerts played in venues such as an ancient Buddhist temple to a traditional jazz bar in the heart of Tokyo, to intense experimental noise venues and art collectives, as well as field recordings of nature, train rides and places visited.
The music is improvisations inspired by the journey, the landscape, the architecture, the sounds, the people, the listeners, the food, the nature, the culture, religion, tradition and not least Gagaku music – a collage of impressions of Japan, expressed in sounds and tones woven together into this record.
Along the tour Soma & Lil had the honor to collaborate with different musicians, among others Yoshio Machida on steel drums (track 5) and Haruhiko Okabe on saxophone and hichiriki (ancient Japanese oboe) with whom we have a 3 year collaboration exploring the tradition of Gagaku Music (track 3, 4, 7 and 10).
